When it comes to golf, Gran Canary has a distinct competitive advantage over other destinations in Europe account of the climate and the fact that it is possible to practice this sport 365 days of the year. The island played a pioneering role with regard to golf in Spain, as the first golf course in the country was built at Escaleritas in 1891. The first members of the Club Decano de España (known today as Real Club de Golf de Las Palmas) were members of the English colony on Gran Canary, providing another example of the strong influence that Britain had on the birth of the island’s tourism industry. Despite the fact that Gran Canary was a pioneer in including this sport, the development of the island's golfing infrastructure initially lagged behind that of other destinations, with most of the golf courses being of relatively recent construction, which means a clear advantage for the island as it has modern golf courses adapted to the most demanding golf players. At present, there are seven golf courses throughout Gran Canary, although they are all situated within a maximum radius of 50 kilometres. Four new golf courses are currently under construction. The golf courses have been designed by the most prestigious international golf course designers and they all boast exceptional features. There is no doubt why national and international tournaments are held throughout the year. On or nearby the golf courses there is possible to buy or rent houses and /or apartments. We would be glad to help you with this. |
